Claude Louis Marie Henri Navier, (Dijon, February 10, 1785- Paris, August 21, 1835), French engineer and scientist. A specialist in mechanics, he established the equations of Navier-Stokes in 1821 and 1822, describing the mechanics of fluids.
Henri Navier is at the origin of the general theory of elasticity (1821), we owe him several memories on navigation channels (1816). He is also a railway specialist, after several study stays in England.
His major contribution remains, however, the Navier-Stokes equations, central equations of fluid mechanics. In complex problems, their resolution requires powerful computers, especially in aeronautics. The ‘Navier Stokes Computer’ computer developed by Princeton University and Concurrent Computer Corp. is currently being used by NASA to study a supersonic aircraft project.
